Have you ever seen anyone so gifted?

I've seen a few while training martial arts.

They possessed enormous talent and skill that I just can't surpass.

At first, I competed against them.

I tried so hard to win.

But ended up losing all the time.

I felt jealous and frustrated.

I even thought of quitting martial arts due to my pride.

As time passed by I stopped competing against them.

And simply acknowledged them.

From then, I trained to not win against them but not to lose.

I started to look back at myself.

I tried to find what I lacked,

and fill them.

My attitude toward training became more serious.

Through training, I focused on filling up myself.

At some point, I realized I couldn't see those gifted ones anymore.

I was still trying and developing,

but the ones with talent lost interest and disappeared.

What is really important is not the inborn talent, but the effort that comes after.

It's a truth across many fields,

and the same for martial arts.

Being a little late at learning something is not so much a big problem.

Trying until you can execute what you've learned is what's truly important.

Do not quit.

If you can do so,

you can reach the goal, though you might be a little late.

From training martial arts we can learn

"the spirit to challenge and not give up."

You will face numerous failures while training martial arts.

You will lose in sparring, in a game, and feel lost not knowing where to go and what to do.

But you will never give up.

You will keep on challenging yourself, and find a way.

Because you know the effort is worth more important than talent.

Let me finish it with a story from Xunzi, a great philosopher of ancient China.

-Xunzi, Encouraging Learning(勸學)-

A fine horse can't traverse ten paces with one stride,

but a slow-footed one can run a great distance in ten days,

success depends on never stopping.
