Today's topic is about how to get beaten and lose well.

The ultimate goal we want to achieve through our training is to win and gain victory. It is, however, pretty impossible to dominate all games without losing any or win without getting hit. When we train in martial arts, we should never forget that we improve by 'losing' and 'getting beaten' well.

A person who trains martial art needs to quickly get out of the fear of being hit.

Once there is the fear of being hit, one's skill is likely to improve. Without fighting against others, one cannot get better at fighting. Without sparring with others, one cannot get better at sparring. There will be pain and the bitterness of defeat. Of course, if one gets struck harshly by the opponent there will be trauma, but only those who overcome the hardship will grow.

It is hard to embody the attack timing and gain the ability to overcome hard situations unless by getting beaten, thrown down, grappled, or chocked for numerous times. Because it is a matter of experience. One who only knows how to win, but does not know how to lose cannot advance.

We need to learn how to lose well. In sparring, we will lose countless times. Then what really is 'losing well?'

Firstly, one should never go into a match or sparring 'without any thoughts.'

Sparring and match are one of the crucial parts of training, where one can test his/her results of training. One should not waste such opportunity by having no thoughts. There needs to be a strategy and tactics.

Strategy means a plan of action to achieve a major aim, while tactic means a specific action intended to get a particular result.

Our everyday training is usually a strategic training. They are to master the techniques. Through such training, we learn who we are. We figure out our psychical characteristics, patterns and find out the tactical method we can use. This is the goal of everyday training. We need to be strategic and tactical.

Secondly, we should not become emotional. Although we have a good strategy and tactics, once we become emotional we get all over the places in sparring and match. Then we earn nothing out of it. When we get excited by being emotional, it is hard to control ourselves. There will be nothing to review after the match.

We train martial arts to rationally control our body and mind as well.

The third thing is recognizing the opponent. I personally think there is a limit in improvement without an opponent. Without an opponent, any great strategy and tactics become meaningless. Especially for new trainees, training with an opponent is very important. One of the most frequent mistakes new trainees make is not properly understanding the opponent. They too easily judge the opponent as easy or unbeatable. What I mean by 'recognizing the opponent' is that when we do not have such judgment, then we can properly get into the situation.

Last is to review. Like reviewing a game of Go, we need to start from the very beginning of a match or sparring. If one has fought in a match or sparring with the three mindsets explained above, then there will be a lot to learn from a game even though one was beaten a lot and even lost the game. The completion of learning lies in reviewing. Through reviewing we can self-reflect and set a new strategy and tactics.

Once someone fought with the four mindsets, a defeat won't be a defeat. It is a priceless experience and a foundation for greater improvement.

A martial artist who does not how to get beaten does not know how to hit. If one cannot rule defeat, there will be no development.

I call it the art of getting beaten and beating.
